“Why the World Needs Chocolate”
by Jaqueline Michard
2/14/10
Each year at this time, Americans purchase as many as 58 million pounds of chocolate for Valentine’s Day. A heart-shaped candy is standard, but these days, biting into one doesn’t guarantee you the old-style vanilla cream. Boutique and artisanal chocolatiers are changing the culture of confection as we know it—and making the world better one bonbon at a time…

A nice blog shout out by one of the winners of our December customer appreciation drawing:

In early December, a piece in the Oregonian’s A & E section about places in Portland serving fancy hot chocolate drinks caught my eye. It named a few places I was familiar with already such as Cacao (great chocolate drinks & addictive 50 cent salted caramels by their register – hello, storefront by the Heathman!) and Pix Patisserie. I noted one I had to yet to try – Alma Chocolate - located in one of my favorite neighborhoods I’ve lived in Portland along the restaurant row of NE 28th and Burnside. Mmm… fancy hot chocolate on a gray Portland winter day, yes please! More here: http://shesagoodegg.wordpress.com/
We look forward to bringing you new truffles, drinks, bakery and delights this year! On the near horizon is our well-balanced, drinkable melted chocolate–The Shot. We have a variety of spiced-up drinks for you as well! The Caramelita is ultra-smooth chocolate with our housemade habanero caramel sauce; the Chile-Cinn Elixir (chilies, cinnamon, chipotle, cloves) is made in-house, and now available on our shelves for you to make at home. Our Mayan drink is full of chocolate, spices and almonds–available in-house soon.
Our year began with a nice review from ChocolateRatings.com. Hope to see you soon!
We will be donating 10% of sales from Thursday (1/14) – Monday (1/18) to Haiti Earthquake Relief via Mercy Corps.
Long time Alma customers know that our (6th!) annual Holiday Ordering Party is creeping up. This year we scheduled it a week earlier than usual so the Alma elves have time to make all those chocolate treats! More info will be coming as we get closer, but we wanted to give you a heads up so you can all save the date:
Sunday, November 29th
12 – 4 pm
Check out our Pre-Order Form (.pdf) before you visit, or call us to set up an order. We’ll be sampling the toffees, barks and caramel sauces, as well as having a super special sale on our in-house bonbons. Order and pay at the shop on November 29th and save 10%!
Alma is beyond pleased to invite you to an artist’s reception for Beth Hart-Andersen’s showing of recycled and found object shrines dolls and necklaces.
Her work is elegant, funky, soulful and just plain beautiful. We’d be proud to host this show no matter what.
But to make it even better? Beth is the sister of Alma’s owner, Sarah.
There will be a lot of love, beautiful art and chocolate treats to take in. So please come by, meet Beth and share in joy of it all.

The Autumnal Equinox falls on the 22nd of September, and here at Alma that means the return of some of our most beloved savory and sweet bon bons: Rosemary Fleur de Lys, the Sabrina with Fig and Marzipan, Ginger Ginger, Cardamom with Burnt Sugar Sesame Crunch, Rosewater Caramels and the Marshy!
We will also begin serving our new rich chocolate drink experience, dubbed “The Cloud” by the Alma staff, as well as Chai (a la Spella Caffe!), autumn inspired baked goodies and the return of the Blue Cheese Stuffed Figs! Watch for more new drinks and goodies through the next few months!
Visit us on September 24 at Indulge @ the Jupiter Hotel. We’ll be side by side with Portland favorites such as Bunk Sandwiches, Noble Rot, Xoxolatl de David, Biwa, House Spirits and more! Enjoy an evening of delicious bites, tempting cocktails, splendid wines and sumptuous sweets. The proceeds will benefit Ecotrust’s Farm to School Program. $30
We are open again on Sundays (11-4) and will return to the PSU Farmer’s Market on Saturday, September 19.
Yippee for Fall!!
Alma is excited to be showing the work of local artist Laurel McSpadden. McSpadden’s work is joyful and groovy. She uses organic shapes, undulating lines, metallics and jewel-tones much like the artist she pays homage to, F. Hundertwasser.
You can see for yourself this Friday night and through the month of September. Fall is in the air, so we’re gonna have our famous chocolate bread pudding for the reception! We’re serving it up with cardamom whipped cream, too.
Come feast with your eyes and your tastebuds!
