“Why the World Needs Chocolate”

by Jaqueline Michard

2/14/10

Each year at this time, Americans purchase as many as 58 million pounds of chocolate for Valentine’s Day. A heart-shaped candy is standard, but these days, biting into one doesn’t guarantee you the old-style vanilla cream. Boutique and artisanal chocolatiers are changing the culture of confection as we know it—and making the world better one bonbon at a time…

Valentine’s treats at Alma

Here is a little preview of what we will have in the shop for Valentine’s. Online, too. Starting Feb. 1.

A milagro style flaming heart

A milagro style flaming heart

Valentine’s Day

Chocolate is for lovers—chocolate lovers, that is. Available February 1st through 14th.

Lovebird Heart Lollies

Tattoo-style heart with two lovebirds. On a stick, in milk or dark chocolate.

Valentine’s chocolate selections

Order a 6-piece of our caramels, a 10-piece of our favorites, or a 16-piece sampler. Included in the 10 and 15 piece are the seasonal Milk Chocolate Praline Hearts.

Many of our gilded icons are perfect for Valentine’s gifts. Consider an anatomical heart, a gilded swallow or a charming devil, for example!

Welcome, 2010.

We look forward to bringing you new truffles, drinks, bakery and delights this year! On the near horizon is our well-balanced, drinkable melted chocolate–The Shot. We have a variety of spiced-up drinks for you as well! The Caramelita is ultra-smooth chocolate with our housemade habanero caramel sauce; the Chile-Cinn Elixir (chilies, cinnamon, chipotle, cloves) is made in-house, and now available on our shelves for you to make at home. Our Mayan drink is full of chocolate, spices and almonds–available in-house soon.

Our year began with a nice review from ChocolateRatings.com. Hope to see you soon!

We will be donating 10% of sales from Thursday (1/14) – Monday (1/18) to Haiti Earthquake Relief via Mercy Corps.

Holiday Ordering Party (save the date!)

Long time Alma customers know that our (6th!) annual Holiday Ordering Party is creeping up. This year we scheduled it a week earlier than usual so the Alma elves have time to make all those chocolate treats! More info will be coming as we get closer, but we wanted to give you a heads up so you can all save the date:

Sunday, November 29th
12 – 4 pm

Check out our Pre-Order Form (.pdf) before you visit, or call us to set up an order. We’ll be sampling the toffees, barks and caramel sauces, as well as having a super special sale on our in-house bonbons. Order and pay at the shop on November 29th and save 10%!

Autumn is Nearing

The Autumnal Equinox falls on the 22nd of September, and here at Alma that means the return of some of our most beloved savory and sweet bon bons: Rosemary Fleur de Lys, the Sabrina with Fig and Marzipan, Ginger Ginger, Cardamom with Burnt Sugar Sesame Crunch, Rosewater Caramels and the Marshy!

We will also begin serving our new rich chocolate drink experience, dubbed “The Cloud” by the Alma staff, as well as Chai (a la Spella Caffe!), autumn inspired baked goodies and the return of the Blue Cheese Stuffed Figs! Watch for more new drinks and goodies through the next few months!

Visit us on September 24 at Indulge @ the Jupiter Hotel. We’ll be side by side with Portland favorites such as Bunk Sandwiches, Noble Rot, Xoxolatl de David, Biwa, House Spirits and more! Enjoy an evening of delicious bites, tempting cocktails, splendid wines and sumptuous sweets. The proceeds will benefit Ecotrust’s Farm to School Program. $30

We are open again on Sundays (11-4) and will return to the PSU Farmer’s Market on Saturday, September 19.

Yippee for Fall!!

It’s Hot!

Alma will be closed Sundays in August, and September 6/7th. We will not be at the Portland Farmer’s Market until September.

There may be late afternoons this month that we close early due to the burning sun, so be sure to call before heading over. If you’re worried about things melting on your way home, ask us for a frozen ice pack to keep things nice and chilly…just bring it back the next time!

While you’re in the shop, try out one of our refreshing icy treats! We’ve expanded our Chocopop selection to include chocolatey frozen pops with berries, coconut milk and flakes, candied orange peel, espresso, peanut butter…the list keeps growing! Yumm.

Summertime!

With hot weather comes icy cold goodness! We have lots of favorite drinks this year with berries, espresso, tea and/or chocolate. See some of our favorites below, but visit us to see the full hot and cold selection! Yumm…strawberries….` … » more
