“Why the World Needs Chocolate”
by Jaqueline Michard

Each year at this time, Americans purchase as many as 58 million pounds of chocolate for Valentine’s Day. A heart-shaped candy is standard, but these days, biting into one doesn’t guarantee you the old-style vanilla cream. Boutique and artisanal chocolatiers are changing the culture of confection as we know it—and making the world better one bonbon at a time…

Here is a little preview of what we will have in the shop for Valentine’s. Online, too. Starting Feb. 1.

A milagro style flaming heart
Valentine’s Day
Chocolate is for lovers—chocolate lovers, that is. Available February 1st through 14th.
Lovebird Heart Lollies
Tattoo-style heart with two lovebirds. On a stick, in milk or dark chocolate.
Valentine’s chocolate selections
Order a 6-piece of our caramels, a 10-piece of our favorites, or a 16-piece sampler. Included in the 10 and 15 piece are the seasonal Milk Chocolate Praline Hearts.
Many of our gilded icons are perfect for Valentine’s gifts. Consider an anatomical heart, a gilded swallow or a charming devil, for example!

In early December, a piece in the Oregonian’s A & E section about places in Portland serving fancy hot chocolate drinks caught my eye. It named a few places I was familiar with already such as Cacao (great chocolate drinks & addictive 50 cent salted caramels by their register – hello, storefront by the Heathman!) and Pix Patisserie. I noted one I had to yet to try – Alma Chocolate - located in one of my favorite neighborhoods I’ve lived in Portland along the restaurant row of NE 28th and Burnside. Mmm… fancy hot chocolate on a gray Portland winter day, yes please! More here: http://shesagoodegg.wordpress.com/
